![]() ![]() This famed, massive reverberator first saw the light of day as an algorithm in our rackmount DSP4000 and remained a favorite in the rackmount H8000FW. In short, Blackhole is destined to be one of those tools that you turn to time and again when reality just isn't enough. Whether you're at the event horizon or closer to home, Blackhole will inspire and amaze while its intutive controls will allow you to add that special something to your tracks without a degree in rocket science. While it’s true Blackhole is capable of creating space-warping special effects and drones, it’s also capable of creating musical and subtle effects you’ll find useful for highlighting key instruments or painting a backdrop for your mix. At small sizes those very same qualities can add an angelic sheen to vocals or turn a simple drum track into an otherworldy rhythm section. At large sizes, its soft attack and lingering, harmonic tails allows it to really shine on guitars, strings and pads. Our Blackhole reverb breaks the rules by allowing you to create virtual spaces that could never exist in reality (at least the one we inhabit). ![]() Saving a preset is fairly easy as you can use the Active and Freeze button for this process. Most reverbs are earth-bound and constrained by the physics of the real world. When a preset is edited the Preset LED blinks once. The currently loaded preset is indicated on the Preset LED ladder. The Blackhole comes with five stock presets, and 127 accessible via MIDI. The Freeze footswitch is an on/off switch to freeze the reverb tail, and also acts as a preset selector. The Active/Bypass footswitch is to engage and disengage the pedal. Out Lvl – Boost/Cut output level, Center for unity gain.Q – Resonance of Lo and Hi filters, Q has no effect if Lo/Hi knobs are set to midpoint.Size – Size of the imagined reverb space.Feedback – Add repeats to the reverb tail, infinite decay and freeze.Gravity- Turn right for normal decay, turn left for inverse decay.Mix – Lets you mix the dry and wet (effected) signals. There’s a button/LED on the top-right (with the down-arrow icon) that lets you toggle between primary and secondary functions. The pedal has six knobs but five of them perform dual function. Guitarists will have fun tweaking the knobs and synthesists will enjoy using the EDM (Eventide Device Manager) software to harness its extended functionality. On the surface Blackhole looks deceptively simple, but it is rather deep and complex-sounding. Needless to say, you would have no problem if you would gig with this pedal in Italy or in the Philippines. What’s great about the included power adaptor is it comes with a set of different AC adapter plugs for international use. ![]() ![]() And finally, a 9V DC input jack (center negative) to power up the pedal. You can connect the pedal via mini USB to your PC or Mac computer for software updates, system settings and creating/saving presets. Below the jacks are mono/stereo switch, if you want the pedal to run in mono or stereo mode, and a switch to accommodate guitar or line-level input signals. It has a 1/4″ input jack that can accommodate mono and stereo sources, two 1/4″ TS mono output jacks for stereo operation and an EXP jack to connect any expression pedal for creative purposes. All the connectors are in the rear panel for easy cabling with other pedals and plugging in a power source. The Blackhole is a mono-in to mono-out and a stereo-in to stereo-out pedal. When it comes to pro gear, Eventide really makes great looking and solid-built products. The casing has a matte black finish, with white lettering, black knobs, red LEDs and silver footswitches. Housed in a small enclosure, Blackhole looks fantastic as it sounds. ![]()
